On the occasion of the International Year of Forests, Eustostat publishes a complete research regarding the European forests.
In 2010, the forests and the other wooden fields covered 178 millions hectares in the European Union, approx. 40% of its surface. In 2009, the sources of renewable energy provided 9% of total gross energy consumption in the European Union. The wood and wood waste were the first source of renewable energy, almost half of the renewable energy consumption in the European Union.
According to numbers provided by Eurostat, the biggest wooden fields are in Finland, Sweden and Slovenia. In 2010, 6 member states had more than a half of their surfaces covered with forests and wooden fields: Finland (77%), Sweden (76%), Slovenia (63%), Latvia (56%), Spain (55%), Estonia (54%). The less wooden surfaces were found in Malta (less than 0,5%), in Netherlands (11%), In Ireland and in United Kingdom, 12% each and in Denmark (14%).
