Wood and wood products exports from Ghana added up to 23,948 cubic meters and were estimated at 7.9 million in January 2011, compared with numbers recorded in January 2010: 26,430 cubic meters - 8.27 million euros.
According to ITTO they have dropped 9.4% and 4.4% in volume and value. In January 2011, all exports of wood products have decreased, except exports of plywood and flooring. Primary product exports were valued at 3 million euros in January, compared with 3.6 million recorded in the same period last year. Similarly, exports of secondary wood products fell by 3.5%, from 7 million in January 2010 to 6.8 million in January 2011.
However, exports of tertiary products were valued at 902.209 USD in January 2010, registering a spectacular growth of 32% from 681,275 $ (january 2010). Primary, secondary and tertiary products accounted for 3%, 86% and 11% of total exports.
In January 2011, Ghana’s share of wood exports was 51% of the total exports of African countries; the recorded share in 2010 was 36%. Exports to other destinations include Europe (26% of the total export), Asia / Far East (15%) and the Middle East (5%). The main importing countries in Europe were Italy, France, Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, Spain, Ireland and the Netherlands.
Plywood accounted for 38% of total wood exports from Ghana in January 2011. Compared with January 2010, exports of plywood have increased by 9.2% in volume and 32% in value. The main countries importing plywood from Ghana were Nigeria, Niger and Togo. Ceiba, mahogany and ofram were the main species used in plywood production.
