This region wants to multiply the forested areas in 30 years in order to improve the environments quality and life quality of habitants, but also from economical raisons.
The most populate region of France has the smallest forested area: 7% compared to 28% in other regions. “Double the forested surface in 30 years represents a difficult and ambitious project, but we need it”, explains Emmanuel Cau, the vice-president of regional council, in charge with the environment. The project implies a cost of 400 millions euro for the subvention of planted trees and the support given to develop wood industry.
According to Emmanuel Cau, the forest offers many services to the collectivity (fight against greenhouse effect, the protection of biodiversity, etc.).
Local wood species will be replanted (ash and hornbeam) with the owner’s agreement. Approx. 1500 trees will be planted this winter, which represent a symbolic contribution, but it allows the association between the citizens and collectivity’s projects.
