The social center called today Centre-Mauges represents one place that proposes manual activities. Here, the artist Jean-Claude Clavier discovered the art of wood sculptures. It was love at first sight. Since he was a teenager, he worked with the wood. “The wood is a simple and also a complex material in its structure. Even today, I am convinced that it is innovator; its potential was not totally exploited…Its imperfections can be transformed into qualities if we are watching it, if we understand it, if we are playing with its outlines and its knots”.
The artist enjoys carrying out thoroughly his creation with passion, inspiration and intuition.
His creations are symbolic, above all, abstracts, minimalist. Before beginning to work, he is studying the prime product for a long time. “The sculptures of Brancusi, Pompon and Henry Moore represent a real inspiration for me. I give importance finishing; I love polished outlines because they give movement and expression to the sculpture”, tells the artist. Having the main idea, the artist can proceed to create.
“I prefer French wood species like the elm tree, pear tree, berberis (one species of bush), arbousier, yew tree, etc. These species do not present a commercial interest, but they are precious to me”. The wood art does not represent his only fix idea, he is also collecting. “I have 150 of different French species and I preserve 25 pots with sawdust”.
The exposition can be visited from Monday to Friday.
