The French Government had started a plan of national solidarity, which has as a purpose helping people from the wood/forest branch in less than 6 weeks after Klaus storm. This windstorm made landfall over southwest of France, especially Aquitaine, north of Spain and part of Italy between 23-25 of January 2009.
This help consists in repairing the damages, valorizing wood from and forest reconstruction. One year later, on 6th of January 2010, the audit for the amount that was assigned in this purpose is the following: a subsidy of 143 millions of Euros was assigned for the excavation of the forestry roads and transport. 415 millions of Euros for 8 years are reserved for helping the forestry owners from 3 affected regions (Aquitaine, Midi-Pyréneées, Languedoc-Roussillon) in order to clean and forest about 150.000 hectares.
In present more than 23.000 km of forestry roads, intended to defense forests against the fire are opened again. This work contributed to limit fires from forests in Aquitaine, this summer. 14 millions m3 maritime pine, caused by the wind storm, were evacuated.
The Ministry of Alimentation, Agriculture and Fishing has planned a commission that is in charge with proposing a device of covering the storm risk, being adjusted to the forestry branch. This commission is studying especially the dispositions necessary to build a device of maintenance the development of a private insurance market.
