There are 963 national protected areas in Romania, which cover 7% of the country’s surface. In UN countries, these type of areas cover almost 14.24%; this underlines our country’s inferiority in this sector.
Romania also has 400 Natura 2000 areas, which spread on 17.84% of the country’s territory. They have neither an administrative nor a managerial system.
These statistics determined GreenPeace Romania to speed up the procedures for establishing The National Agency for Protected Areas (NAPA)invokining aspects such as: the cutting down of forests with the knowledge of local authorities and the alarm signals send by nature itself.
Gabriel Paun, coordonator for GreenPeace Romania requires the urgent intervention of the prime-minister Tariceanu, in forming NAPA.
The devastating consequences on nature brought in the attention of authorities are caused by: illegal cuttings, masive constuctions for turism, hunting and the exploitation of natural resources.
These aspects affect the virgin forests from the Valcan Mount., The National Parks of Retezat and Ceahlau, considered the last „bastions” for conserving the natural patrimony of our country.
The organisation and functionality of NAPA exist on paper (being elaborated by the Ministry of Environment and Durable Sustainability), yet the actions for establishing it are being delayed by the Ministry of Economy and Finances, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administrative Reform and by the Ministry of Justice |
